The Vault

It’s not everyday that you find a walk-in safe in someone’s house. The kidnapper must be hiding something important in there. You can feel it in your bones that if there is a way of finding those missing people, it must be behind those doors.

The kidnapper’s obsession with cards has followed you here as well and their presence once again couldn’t be a coincidence. Perhaps there is a hidden message once again. But if there is one, it is up to you to figure it out. The tension in the room is palpable, the silent blue flashing lights still running outside are not helping too much either. They keep distracting you.

Trying to overcome the cacophony of people talking loudly to and over each other, you glare at the safe; willing it to open itself and reveal its many secrets. But alas there is a PIN-pad that seems to stare back at you with equal resolve; a gatekeeper daring you to overcome its prowess. Making matters worse is the fact that trying to bypass this lock could seal the safe forever and your chances of finding those people could evaporate into thin air.

You crack your neck and get to work.

The Vault

Do you know what the kidnapper’s favorite game is?

It must be a card game, maybe one played by the suspects found by Sonnburg PD?

Inspect the cards: they have wrong letters for king, queen and jack. Was there any reference to such a different deck of cards anywhere in the game?

The cards are for the german game named Skat (see newspaper for details). Games are played based on rules. Is there a Skat rule you could use?

In the newspaper article itโ€™s said that Jack (B) is the strongest card in the game. And the kidnapper refers refers to a “jack of all trades” in their message. Can the Jacks give you a sequence of numbers?

There is a clear order for these cards: club, spade, heart, diamond. Does ordering the Jacks this way give you any sequence of numbers?

Try laying the cards out in front of you in order given by the Skat rule. Can you see a string of numbers now? Make sure to lay down the cards the right side up (at least one of the handwritten numbers on the sides has a dot, which needs to be at the bottom)
