Startled by the jolt of the airplane touching down, you awaken. Rubbing your eyes it takes a moment to gather your thoughts and figure out where you are. The book on Mesoamerican history in your lap reminds you what you are doing here. You need to find Prof. McEwan and get him home safely.

As you walk out of the airport, you hail a cab. Even though you are not here for sightseeing, you very much enjoy the ride from the airport to the hotel. Once you told her of your discovery, Hannah was elated at the possibility of you being able to locate and help the professor. She was kind enough to look into the research group’s expense reports for you, and found out which hotel professor McEwan favors – so you booked your stay there as well.

Now open the envelope marked Hotel.

In the Hotel envelope you will find:

  • Small sheet with Aztec Calendar.
  • Professor McEwan’s note about the calendar.
  • Bank safety deposit box envelope — sealed.

You walk up to the reception desk to check in. While making small talk with the staff and just to make sure you are not missing anything, you ask the concierge about the professor. He looks up, then turns around and pulls out a letter from a deep drawer which he then hands to you saying, “We haven’t seen the professor in some time now, but he gave us clear instructions to give this to the first person who comes looking for him”.

You almost forget to complete your check-in process, excited to have found a trail to follow so quickly! In the envelope you find a note from the professor himself and what you recognize as an Aztec calendar.

“All that reading about Mesoamerica might just pay off”, you think, as you start reading the note from the professor.

It doesn’t give you his location, but promises that you will be able to find him if you can locate his safety deposit box at the bank. But you need to figure out which one belongs to him first.

Looks like it is time to play one of his games again.

There are those moments in life when you think to yourself: Huh! This is an easy one. I could do it but I just donโ€™t feel like doing the math.

In case you are having one of those moments, use the following resources to make solving this puzzle a little easier on you.

When you find the safety deposit box number, scan the appropriate QR code.

Maybe the interns gathered some personal information about the research group members. Try and have a look back at the interviews.

Their ages should help you order them from oldest to youngest.

The Professor talks about the Aztec calendar. You have a sheet with it. Maybe pay attention to how he talks about the number of days in a month. Can you see the 20 segments in the outermost ring? Those are the months. What can you do with this and the birthdays of his research group members?

20 months of 18 days each, starting at 1 January means that a person born between 1 January โ€“ 18 January will be number 1. A person born between 19 โ€“ 31 January or 1 โ€“ 5 February will be number 2, and so on and so forth.
