Hints

Hint 1
The note on the table says that you should figure out the highest amount of wine sold, for the windows to reveal a secret to you.

The note also says that the bricks covered by the full length of the ribbon like flags on the windows shows how much of a specific wine is still available.

Do both these things to find the secret of the windows.

Hint 2
This task is best divided into three steps. Solving each step, before attempting the next, might make things easier.

STEP 1 – Order of the wine bottles
Hint 1
The sheet with the dining table says that the ribbons on the windows, from left to right, represent the bottles from oldest to the most recent. But the labels on the bottles don’t say anything about when they were produced.

How could you sort them from oldest to newest?

Hint 2
Every bottle that you got seems to be a Chianti type of wine.
Hint 3
Do you have any items that tell you about Chiantis? Perhaps that will help.
Hint 4
Have you read the article in the Sonnburg Post (the magazine article, not the tabloid) about Chiantis?
Hint 5
It looks like the article describes the history of Chiantis in chronological order; from oldest to newest.
Hint 6
The article provides the chronology of wines based on their characteristics. Where can you find the characteristics of the four wines you received?
Hint 7
The article says that since the 14th century, Chiantis are slightly fizzy due to the Govern method. This appears to be the oldest relevant information about the wines.

Is there any Chianti bottle you received that is has no fizz? This should be the oldest bottle.

Hint 8
The next important moment mentioned is the Phylloxera pest.
Hint 9
Then the article mention that vintners started adding French grapes to the wine in this region.
Hint 10
Since 2006 it is forbidden to add white grapes to Chiantis. So the most recent Chianti bottle on the table is the Red Grapes Only.
Solution for step 1
The order of Chianti bottles, from oldest to newest is:

  • No Fizz
  • Phylloxera Era
  • French Grapes
  • Red Grapes Only
STEP 2 – Amounts of wine sold
Hint 1
The sheet with the dining table says that the ribbons on the windows, from left to right, represent the bottles from oldest to the most recent.

In Step 1 you discovered the order of the wines.

Hint 2
The sheet with the dining table says that the ribbons flown in windows represent how much wine is still available. Can you determine what amount each ribbon represents?
Hint 3
Each row of bricks covered by the full length of the flag represents 50 liters left from that specific wine.
Hint 4
Don’t forget that the window sill is also a row of bricks, which is covered by the full length of the flag.
Hint 5 – Math for length of flags
Counting the number of bricks, you get:

  • Star Flag = 15 rows covered = 750 liters left
  • Moon Flag = 6 rows covered = 300 liters left
  • Crown Flag = 9 rows covered = 450 liters left
  • Templar Cross Flag = 12 rows covered = 600 liters left
Hint 6
Now you know how much wine is left for each flag.

From Step 1 you discovered that the order of the wines. As such, from left-to-right, the flags represent:

  • Star Flag = No Fizz
  • Moon Flag = Phylloxera Era
  • Crown Flag = French Grapes
  • Templar Cross Flag = Red Grapes Only

From the bottles you know how much of each wine was produced.

The bricks covered by the full length of the flag tell you how much wine of each type is left.

Just a bit of math is left to figure out how much wine of each type was sold.

Hint 7 – Math for amount of wine sold
To get the amount of wine sold, you just have to subtract the remaining amount from the produced amount. Formula is:

Sold = Produced – Remaining

Solution for step 2
The association between wines and flags is as follows:

Chianti Flag Produced Remaining Sold
No Fizz Star 3210 750 2460
Phylloxera Era Moon 1180 300 880
French Grapes Crown 3130 450 2680
Red Grapes Only Cross 3250 600 2650

ย

STEP 3 – Discover the secret of the windows
Hint 1
The sheet you found with the dining table says that the highest amount of wine sold you might uncover a secret.

In Step 2 you discovered the amount of each wine sold. From there you should be able to find the highest amount of wine sold.

Hint 2
The amount sold (2680) ย is a four digit number and there are 4 windows. Can you show this number in the windows?
Hint 3
Have you seen any item that might relate to the windows?
Hint 4
You discovered multiple long strips with letters and symbols on them. They also have a number in the rounded top. The rounded top looks something like the window. Maybe you can do something with this?
Hint 5
The windows have three little flaps, which seem to be approximately the width of the strips.
Hint 6

Have you tried to thread the strips of paper through the flaps in the window? Maybe try using the strips that match the value for the highest amount of wine sold, i.e., 2680.

Hint 7
Can you read any message on the strips after putting them in? No?

Maybe the symbols on the strips relate to something else on the castle wall.

Hint 8
Under the windowsills there are two arrows pointing at the symbol on the flag. Can you find the same symbol on the strips you just threaded through each window?
Hint 9

Once you align the right symbols on the strips, with the arrows under the window sills, are you able to read a message?

Solution for Step 3

The messages should read:

For the next door this key do not ignore. Yellow is six, brown is two, green is one nine is blue, purple is eight and red is five, when you’re ready you may step inside.

Hint 3
If you have not solved and discovered the secret of the windows yet, then stop right here and go back to Hint 2.

Spoilers ahead.

Hint 4
Do this only after discovering the secret of the window.

The door to the library is locked with three digits. Is there anything that might indicate what would reveal these three digits?

Hint 5
Look closely at the envelope for the library. There might be additional information on it regarding how to use it.
Hint 6
You have previously found six keys. Is there any way to pick which specific ones to choose?
Hint 7
On the envelope for the library there is a flag flying next to the door, with three symbols on it. Can you recognize these symbols?
Hint 8

The symbols on the flag flying next to the library door are the same as three of the keys you have.

But how can you find digits for these keys?

Hint 9
The secret rhyme from the window said, “this key do not ignore”.
Solution
Show Explanation
See Step 1 of Hint 2 for this.ย Using the Sonnburg Post article about Chiantis, you can sort the bottles from oldest to newest: No Fizz, Phylloxera Era, French Grapes, Red Grapes only.

See Step 2 of Hint 2 for this.ย By counting how many rows each flag covers, you can determine how many liters of wine are still left of each wine: 750, 300, 450, 600 liters from left to right.ย Deducting these amounts from the produced amount displayed on the bottles, you can calculate how much wine was sold. The highest amount sold was from French Grapes: 2680 liters.

See Step 3 of Hint 2 for this. The thin, long strips with letters and symbols also have numbers on them. You must place the strips with 2, 6, 8 and 0 in the windows (using the little flaps to hold them in place). In order to get the secret message from the windows, you must align the symbol of the flag with the same symbol on the strip covering it. That will give you the following text: “For the next door this key do not ignore. Yellow is six, brown is two, green is one, nine is blue, purple is eight and red is five, when you’re ready you may step inside.”

Looking at the envelope for the library door, you can notice a flag with three symbols on it. The symbols are the same as three of the keys you have in your possession. Using the rhyme from the window you can determine which digit to use for each symbol on the flag:

Red = 5
Purple = 8
Green = 1
