Arriving in Florence

In the flight you read more about this case in the copy of the The Morning Star that Mr. Gurges sent you. You even discovered a bit about the history of Castello Di Dolcci, and the interconnected histories of the Fabricci and Dolcci families from that article in The Sonnburg Post. The article about the Chiantis has you wishing that you could just take a holiday and relax a bit, while you are here in Italy.

But just as you were walking down the aerobridge, lost in your own thoughts, Poppy interrupts them and reminds you that you are here on work. There is a person who has been missing for almost a year now, and your attention to detail is vital to solving this case. You both step out of the airport and hail a cab.

“Ciao! Do you know this old Italian greeting? I believe it is very famous around the world. Just like our dear Florence. Did you know that all the great Italian masters, even Leonardo Da Vinci himself, found inspiration right here in this wonderful place?”

As you get into the taxi, the driver keeps talking and telling you more about the fabled history of the Medicis, and Florence through the ages. The drive seems quite quick. Stepping out of the cab, sheepishly, Poppy says, “Thank you for taking the trip. I hope you don’t mind me being here with you, as a legal representative. Not that we don’t trust you, but due to the bitter dispute between the Fabriccis and Dolcci family, the court wanted to make sure no one tampered with this place.”

You both walk up to the gate of the castle, which is unsurprisingly locked.

“The gate and fence around it is electrified, so climbing over it is not an option in case you were wondering”, Poppy says when she notices the confused look on your face.

“I have something for you. Two keys which apparently belong to the castle. One was handed down in the Fabricci family, and the other one in the Dolcci family. The two families almost poked each other’s eyes out with them during our meeting. So I though it best to confiscate these from them, before someone did something they’d regret. I wonder how shocked they will be to know that there is no fitting lock on this gate for them anymore.”

Open the Contact Poppy Nicdao envelope now.

  • Two keys

You turn to Poppy and show her the four keys you received in the invitations. Then you gesture to the gate and show her the four key-holes, each with a rotary dial above it. Now she understands the confusion too. It seems that just having keys isn’t enough, but you will need to figure out a numeric code as well to unlock the gate. Enrico Fabricci seems to have been quite paranoid.

But you have a conundrum at your hands. Six keys, four key-holes and no numeric code. How will you ever get in and find out what this was all about?

Hints

Hint 1
Have you found any items that refer to a gate?
Hint 2

There is a small note, not folded, which was hidden in one of the invitations. It writes, “The gate at the beginning…”

Hint 3
There are 6 other scribbles on the same sheet about colors and orientations/directions, e.g. “Red: Increasing”.
Hint 4
Can you find the colors in the note on any other objects you discovered so far?
Hint 5

It looks like the 6 keys you received match the colors on the note.

Hint 6
Have you noticed that all keys have an intricate black design on their long stem? Did you find that design anywhere else?
Hint 7
The same design that appears on the keys is drawn on the note! On the note it seems to be attached to a circle. What could you do with this?
Hint 8
What happens if you lay the keys, one by one, on the circle? Make sure the two intricate designs are over each other as well.
Hint 9

Every key reveals a few of digits on the circle. Maybe you can form numbers with them if you know in what order to take the digits.

Hint 10
Remember the remarks on the small sheet of paper about colors?
Hint 11
Using the appropriate “increasing” and “decreasing” orders, you will end up with the following numbers for each key:

Red: 1278

Brown: 93

Green: 832

Purple: 138

Yellow: 128

Blue: 379

You have the individual numbers now. But how can you determine whichย four to pick and in what order?

Hint 12
The note talks about a “traditional familiar greeting”. Do you know any Italian greetings that this might be referring to? Didn’t the taxi driver say something like “Ciao”?
Hint 13
How can you use the keys to say Ciao?
Hint 14
Check the small heads of the key, which would fit in the keyhole. Can you make them read CIAO?
Solution
Show Explanation

Use the small, unfolded paper you found in the invitation to solve this puzzle.

The colors written on the note refer to the keys you have in your possession.

The keys have a black pattern on them, and the sheet of paper has this same pattern drawn on it, which is connected to a circle. You can overlay the keys on the pattern/circle to reveal some numbers. By combining the colors of the keys with the “increasing” or “decreasing” you get the following numbers for each key:

Red: 1278
Brown: 93
Green: 832
Purple: 138
Yellow: 128
Blue: 379

Now that you have numbers, you need to narrow down four keys that you can use to access the gate. This will give you four numbers you need for each key. You also need to know the order of the keys.

The note talks about a “traditional familiar greeting”. The taxi driver from the airport told you that “Ciao” is a traditional greeting. This same greeting is written on the note as well.

You can use 4 of the keys to write out this greeting.

Look at the smaller end of the key (the one that will be entered in the lock), and notice how 4 of them actually carry the letters C, I, A and O.

Now you just have to sort the keys to say CIAO, and you end up with the numbers that will open the door;

C = Green = 832
I = Purple = 138
A = Brown = 93
O = Yellow = 128
