Open The Refuge

Having successfully navigated the maze, you walk up to the refuge. One section of the mosaic looks like a cover. When you lift it up, a keypad that requires a code stares back at you. It feels like you have arrived at the end of your journey, and you need to use everything you have gathered thus far to figure out the code and reveal the secret that lays behind.

You need to enter three digits to unlock the refuge.

Don’t forget to use all lower case and no spaces.

Hints

Hint 1
Did you read the text on the backside of the maze?
Hint 2
Before you can unlock the refuge, you must navigate the maze to find your way to the correct refuge.

Hints to navigate the maze
Hint 1
The text on the back of the maze mentioned the wines Sassicaia, Tignanello, and Boscarelli.

Have you seen these names anywhere else so far?

Hint 2
There was a letter in the library from Lorenzo Dellucci.

Did you read it?

Hint 3
The letter from Lorenzo Dellucci mentions four bottles of wines, which were produced in the vineyards which now belong to the Castello Di Dolcci.

Have you encountered wine bottles so far?

Hint 4
Can you tie the bottles of Chianti you encountered a the dinner table to the ones on the letter form the auction house?
Hint 5
Each wine in the letter has a small description about it. Are there any similarities to the Chianti bottles on the table?
Hint 6
From the auction letter, and the wine bottles, you can deduce:

The No Fizz Chianti bottle is the Sassicaia.
Phylloxera Era is Tignanello.
French grapes is Ornellaia
Red grapes only is Boscarelli.

Now that you know which bottle on the table is which wine, can you see how this could help you navigate the maze?

Hint 7
Remove the strips form the castle’s windows, in case they are still there.

Remember how the ribbons in the windows of the castle, from left to right, represent the bottles form oldest to the most recent?

Hint 8
Each flag has a symbol on it. You already know which wine bottle belongs to each flag since you can sort them by age.
Hint 9
Each wine can be associated with a symbol on the flag at the castle’s window (sorted by age, left-to-right). ย This means:

Sassicaia = Star
Tignanello = Moon
Ornellaia = Crown
Boscarelli = Templar Cross

Within the maze, you happen upon the same symbols. Do you remember how to find the path to the right refuge?

Hint 10
The note behind the maze says:

Your path to the refuge passes the signs for Sassicaia, Tignanello, and Boscarelli wines. On the correct path, you’ll encounter each wine strictly in this order and the order appears twice.

So on the path to the right refuge will encounter the following symbols, in this order:

star, moon, cross, star, moon, cross.

Now try to find the right path.

Hint 11
You can eliminate any of the paths which don’t start with a star.

Also remember to explore all the paths and their bifurcations.

Solution for navigating the maze

The green path shows the one and only path that meets the criteria of star, moon, cross, star, moon, cross in order to reach a refuge.

The correct refuge is, as such, the one in the top-middle. The correct symbols for it are shown below.

Hint 3
Did you navigate the maze already? If not, go back to Hint 2 and see how to do so.

If you found the refuge, then try to see what items you have found so far that can help you figure out how to open the refuge.

Hints to open the refuge
Hint 1
Did you already find the correct refuge? If not, go back and look at the hints for navigating the maze.

The next hint will reveal the correct one to you.

Hint 2

The right refuge is the top-middle one.

The note on the back of the maze says that the entrance to the refuge is covered with a mosaic depicting the coats of arms from the lineage of the Dolcci family. The symbols for it are shown above.

Have you seen these symbols anywhere else in the game?

Hint 3
Did you look closely atย the yellow sheets of the invitations you received at the beginning of the game?
Hint 4
Each yellow sheet of the invitations has one of the coats of arms from the mosaic in the refuge.

Try to place them next to each other in the same pattern as the mosaic.

Hint 5
The mosaic is made in black and white. Make sure you assemble the pattern with the black print side up.

ย

Hint 6
The yellow sheets have some numbers on them. Can you link them to each other in any way?
Hint 7
The note says to thread from below to above. Is there anything you could use to thread with?
Hint 8
The ribbons which held the invitations together can be used to thread though the holes which belong together.

Can you tell which holes belong together and which ribbons to use?

Hint 9

Each yellow sheet from the invitation also contains a Florentine Lily. Did you see that symbol anywhere else?

Hint 10
You found a painting at the entrance to the Ferrano Vineyard. Can that painting help you somehow?
Hint 11
Try laying the yellow invitation sheet one by one over the painting.ย Make sure that the Florentine Lilly points the same way for the yellow sheet and the painting.

Hint 12
If you lay the yellow invitation sheet one by one over the painting, the holes with numbers next to them will all reveal a color. The holes which reveal the same color, belong together.The holes which reveal the same color, belong together.

This means, for the following invitations, you get these color-number combinations:

  • Shield with swords
    • Light Green = (1; 4), (3), (2; 5), (6)
    • Green = (3)
  • Shield with lion
    • Light Green = (7), (9), (8; 10)
  • Shield with arrows
    • Red = (7), (4), (5; 8), (3; 6)
    • Green = (2; 4)
  • Shield with crown
    • Red = (2), (1)
    • Green = (1)

Please look at the image to distinguish between the same number having two colors on one sheet.

Hint 13
Don’t forget what the note behind the maze says: thread from below to above, then from above to below.

Can you use this instruction, along with the assigned colors to each numbered hole, to thread specific ribbons?

Hint 14
Use the same colored ribbons as the colors under the numbered holes to make solving the puzzle easier.

For each ribbon start from below, at the hole which has the number “1” on it. Now the ribbon is above the surface, and you need to thread from “above to below” at the hole which has the number “2” on it.ย Continue on at hole “3” from below to above, and so on.

If a hole has numbers separated by a colon, then you will have to thread through that hole multiple times. Depending on the number, the direction may change (sometimes below-to-above, sometimes above-to-below).

When you are done, you should see something like the image below:

Hint 15

Can you read out something from the threads? Remember that you need 3 digits to open the door to the refuge.

Show digits
Green = 7
Red = 4
Light Green = 5
Hint 16
The envelope for the refuge shows three ribbons on it.

Try sorting these numbers by the top to bottom order of the ribbons on the envelope.

Solution for how to open the refuge
After you thread the ribbons through the yellow invitation, you will see numbers:

These numbers read:

Green = 7
Red = 4
Light Green = 5

To get the right order, if you look at the envelope it shows three ribbon colors for how it is locked. Top-to-bottom these are Green, Light Green, Red.

Converting these to corresponding numbers, you get, 754.

  2. See all sub-hints for Hint 3 to get a detailed explanation of how to unlock the refuge.

Once you navigate through the maze, you find the following image for the refuge:

Using this as information, you can arrange the yellow invitations in this pattern. By placing the painting with the same lily under the invitations you can also assign colors to each of the holes with numbers. Once you have colors associated to the holes, you must use ribbons to thread between these holes. As the note suggests, you start from below-to-above and then you go from above-to below. Following this pattern, you will get the following:

The threads will show you 3 digits: red = 4, green = 7, light green = 5.

The three colored ribbons from the envelope for the refuge show the order in which you should sort these numbers for the solution of the lock, i.e. Green, Light Green, Red.
