๐Ÿ“ฃ An important update from the Enigma Fellowship  —  read here

Site 3

You’re happy to learn that the third and last village is not too far away. While you love the scenery and the winding roads leading up to this particular village, the so called African massage given by the dirt roads in the Serengeti is starting to get you a bit tired. Solomon’s anecdotes have been quite entertaining all day and you feel like you will miss them once this seemingly short mission is over.

Just then you realize that Solomon is keeping really quiet. When you try to ask him why he is quiet and what he can tell you about the village, he just silently shakes his head before responding.

“Like the road signs say on these twisty roads – Hatari! You know, danger, in Swahili.”

“Man, here in the Serengeti we are like a big family – almost everyone knows everyone. But even like this, I know nothing about this tribe. Nothing at all! Only rumors that they take their warrior craft seriously and are not very fond of visitors. Can you imagine that even the name of their tribe is a closely guarded secret? This tribe just makes me nervous.”

“But I will be here, if you get scared we can just drive away quickly!โ€

He makes his words sound light hearted, but you can also sense the seriousness in them. Somehow they didnโ€™t manage to calm you down. The sight you see when you reach the third village does not seem to help either.

Unlike the other tribes, you are not greeted by a smiling face. Instead a tall, and very fit looking warrior is standing in your way. He doesnโ€™t look aggressive, but he definitely means business. He looks very comfortable with his shield and spear. Considering that they use these to fend off lions, you’re not too keen to witness his prowess firsthand.

The warrior strikes his spear on the ground and says you may only proceed if you tell him the name of his tribe. Only those with sacred knowledge about their tribe may step upon their lands.

You look at Solomon, hoping to get some help. Then you notice that he never left the car. He is giving you a wide grin from the safety of the vehicle. He shows you a thumbs up and just gestures for you to proceed.

Hints

Hint 1
The flyers from the lodges were quite helpful at the other sites. Maybe there is something you can use to help you deduce the name of this tribe.
Hint 2
Try to focus on the pamphlet that has the map for Site 3. It might have something that could be helpful for this challenge.
Hint 3
The pamphlet for the Ngorongoro Lodgeย describes the shields held by the warriors of the Sutepake tribe. Can you use this information?
Hint 4

You tried the name Sutepake? Well, sorry, that’s not correct. After all, the design on the shield held by the warrior asking you a question is not the same as the shields used by Sutepake warriors.

Try to look at the pattern on the Sutepake shield and the information that came with it.

Hint 5
Have you seen information about shields of other tribes elsewhere?

Solomon, your experienced guide suggested a specific route. Have you followed his suggestion of completing the tasks at Sites 1 and 2 already? If not, then now might be a good time to do this first.

Hint 6
The little info sheets from Sites 1 and 2 also talk about the shields of their tribes.

Do they mention any particular symbols and their meanings? Is there any more information in them too?

Hint 7

The info sheet about the Taleaga shields says that the middle of the shield gives you the nameย of the village.

Can you tell how the names of the shields whose tribe names are already known connect the design in the middle?

Hint 8

Did you notice, that the total number of Os in the middle of the shield are the same asย the length of the names for each tribe?

Hint 9
You know how to figure out the length of the name, and that it connects to the Xs and Os.

Did you also notice the design of the shields and the characteristics of each tribe mentioned? How could these tie together?

Hint 10
The Wopanakeย (Site 1)ย shield has a โ€œtwin-colored curveโ€ on itโ€™s left side (the thing that looks like a vertical rainbow). This signifies Land.

If you look closely the shield from Site 3 also has this feature in it.

Hint 11

The Taleaga (Site 2) shield has โ€œmany dotsโ€ inside the shape on the right side of theย shield. The info sheet tells you that these many dots, when on the inside of this boundary, mean cattle.

The shield fromย Site 3 also has this feature in it.

Hint 12

The โ€œred pointed featureโ€ on the ride side of the Wopanake shield means that theyย are not guards.

On the other hand, the Taleaga tribe has the characteristic guardย associated with them and their shield does not have this feature – instead it hasย mirrored raindrop shapes.

The shield from Site 3 also has these mirrored raindrops in it.

Hint 13

All three known shields have a direction in them as well: South, West, East.

Can youย connect these directions to a feature on the shields?

Hint 14
The position of the red dot on the shield reveals the direction. (North, South, East, etc.)
Hint 15
Now that you know the characteristics the designs on the shields reveal, try to find the ones that are left out. You should be able to deduce these from the designs on the shields and the characteristics of each tribe.
Solution
Show Explanation
The shield info sheet of the Taleaga informed you that the middle of the shield identifies the name of the tribe. The number of Os in the center of each shield is the same as the length of each tribe’s name.

A keen eye will also notice that the name of each tribe is derived from the characteristics of the tribes most important to them. The Os mark the letter to be picked, and the Xs mark the letters to be ignored. As such, you get:

  • Wopanake — West peOPle lANd MAKEr
  • Taleaga — easTย cAttLEย wAter GuArd
  • Sutepake — SoUTh pEoPle wAter maKEr

This means that you need to determine the characteristics for the tribe at Site 3. The info sheets about the shields also mentioned things that you can deduce from the designs of the shields.

For the tribe at Site 3, these characteristics are:

  • North — the red circle on the left side of the shield indicates the direction. The three other shields show you East, West and South. As such, for Site 3 it is north because the circle is on the top. You can deduce that the red circle indicates direction because it is the only thing that changes position in each shield.
  • Cattle — the Taleaga info sheet says that the curvy shapes in the right hemisphere represent the boundaries of the village and the dotsย inside are cattle. Since the dots are inside on Site 3’s shield as well, the characteristic is cattle.
  • Land — the Wopanake info sheet says that the twin-color curves in the left hemisphere represent land. Site 3’s shield also has this shape, unlike the other shields that have the jagged pattern. As such, the characteristic land applies here.
  • Guard — none of the info sheets directly tell you what the symbol for guard is, but the Wopanake info sheet tells you that the pointy feature on the right of the shield represents maker; this also appears on the Sutepake’s shield who also have the characteristic maker. The Taleaga have the double teardrop like pattern on their shield, just like for Site 3 and they have the characteristic guard. As such, Site 3 also has the characteristic guard.

Using the Xs and Os on the Site 3 shield we can extract the name of the tribe.

  • Nalangu — North cAttLe lANd GUard
